George Millard Courtney Jr., 69, of Advance, passed away on June 24, 2019 at his home while under hospice care.
George was born March 14, 1950 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, a son to the late George M. Courtney Sr. and Glera Gertrude Burt. He attended and graduated from Needles High School with the class of 1969 and also earned an associate’s degree while in the military. He later married Jana Louise Ward. George was preceded in death by both of his parents, as well as his son Steven Walter Courtney.
In life, George had a long and honorable career serving in the U.S. Army for 24 years. He was an MP, achieved the rank of E7 1st Sergeant and retired in 1992. He honorably served in the Vietnam conflict in 1968 & 1969. During his military service, he received his CIB badge, was a three-time recipient of the Purple Heart and also received the Bronze Star and Silver Star for valor. George was also of the Baptist faith.
George is survived by a large and loving family, including his wife of 11 years, Jana Louise Ward Courtney, son George M. Courtney III of Pfafftown, son Anthony William Courtney of Mocksville, stepsons Freddie & Tommy Martin of Tara Hill, stepdaughter Melanie Martin of Advance, brother Edward M. Courtney Sr. (Connie) of California, sister Laura R. Canter (Calvin) of Mocksville, sister Sallie M. Strong (Johnny) of Mocksville, grandson Steve Michael Courtney as well as several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 27 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at the Davie Funeral Service Chapel in Mocksville. A funeral service will be held the following day, Friday, June 28 at 2:00 PM, also at the Davie Chapel, with Pastor Donnie Chapman officiating. Interment will be at Rose Cemetery.
