Donna Mae Nichols Whitaker, 72, of Country Lane, Mocksville, died Monday, November 2, 2015 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Known by many as “Nannie”, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She was born in Cazenovia, NY on December 24, 1943, daughter of the late James Nichols and Beatrice Mary Coleman Nichols. She worked in the Textile Industry for many years and was of the Methodist faith. She loved to work, especially yard work, gardening and canning. She also enjoyed fishing and boating.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 55 years, James Franklin Whitaker of the home; one daughter, Annette W. Steele of Mocksville; a son-in-law, Rick Steele; two grandchildren, Benjamin Steele (Sheryl) of Advance and Leslie Taylor (James) of Mocksville; three great grandchildren: Tyler Steele, Hunter Steele and Marshall Taylor; three brothers: Jack Nichols (Phyllis) of Mocksville, Richard Nichols (Florence) of New York, and Rodney Custer (Kayla) of Advance; five sisters: Marjorie Wall, Sandy Potts (Richard), Jeanette Steelman and Gail Spry, all of Mocksville, and Linda Parker of New York; ; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Nichols, of Mocksville; and several nieces and nephews.
Donna was preceded in death by her mother, Beatrice M. Custer; her father, James H. Nichols; her beloved step-father, Alvin A. “Pappy” Custer; three brothers, John, Kenneth and Jim Nichols and infant twin sisters; plus a “sister-at-heart”, Hazel Dalton.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted Saturday, November 7, 2015, at 1:00 pm at Davie Funeral Chapel with Pastor Rowan Fay officicating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
